Catharina & Douglas Jacobsson, Sweden
Catharina and Douglas have fully embraced Island life since they moved in 2001! Their scenic adventures inspired them to create popular Instagram account, @loveisleofman, where they share pictures of their life in the Isle of Man.How long have you lived on the Isle of Man and what made you move here?
My husband, Douglas and I moved here in 2001 to join a life company which provides specialist support for the Scandinavian and Swedish speaking market. The idea was to come here for a year or two and then move back. But over time the Isle of Man has become our home as we got to know and fall in love with the people and the way of life. Now, we cannot imagine living anywhere else!
How would you describe it to someone who has never been?
A world of its own. A place that is keen on tradition and heritage but still wants to explore and innovate itself without losing its identity. A green jewel where nature is only 5 minutes away, be that the sea or a forest. In the Isle of Man, people still say hello to each other and it has its own slower pulse. It’s safe and the whole community wants to ensure it stays like this.
How did you find a job in the Isle of Man?
We were in the same line of business before we moved and were able to join one of the best life companies on the Island at the time using our contacts. My employer applied for my work permit and the application was quickly processed by the Government.
Tell us about your job – what do you enjoy most about it?
Today, we work in regulatory compliance in the gaming industry. The industry offers a modern approach to people management, work life balance and allows me to grow both as an individual and professionally. Every day is an opportunity to learn something new and the company celebrate successes so we all feel appreciated and part of something great.
Do you feel there is career progression for you in the Isle of Man?
Absolutely, the Island is what you make of it. It has a diverse business culture and has given me opportunity to change from the finance to gaming industry.
How was your experience moving to the Isle of Man?
When we moved here, it was my employer who applied for the work permit. It was processed with no problems and our employer helped us to ensure that we opened up a bank account. We think it is important that visas and work permits are obtained to ensure that we all contribute to this island. We felt very welcomed and have made this place our forever home.
What difference has living on the Isle of Man made to your work-life balance? How do you spend your free time?
Everything is close by and we are able to have a good work life balance. We have less than 30min commute time and it is a lovely drive over the iconic TT course! Island life has allowed us more time with the family, enjoying sports and walks – great trails across the countryside to be explored by foot or mountain bike.
Excellent connections across the Island have allowed us to enjoy a good meal anywhere at one of the Island’s ever improving restaurants and to return home on the bus or the tram.
We enjoy taking photographs of our island and love to share them for others to see on our Instagram @loveisleofman. We like to support the local suppliers, farmers and amazing artists.
What’s the best-kept secret on the Isle of Man?
The great trails across the Island which allows you to explore the wonderful scenery, old Tholtans and the most amazing starry skies we have ever seen.
What opportunities has living on the Isle of Man given you and your family?
The good education system and low crime has given our family a unique and safe place to call home.
Why would you recommend the Isle of Man to others looking to relocate and what would be your top tips?
Allow yourself to enter a different time zone, life is slower and friendlier. If you want to travel, the busy cities in UK and Ireland are only a short flight away.
The Isle of Man is a community and we encourage you to allow yourself to be a part of it. You will find new friends, chat with your neighbours and always receive a helping hand if you need it. I hope that this Island will continue to grow and evolve without losing this sense of community - where we look after each other and that we all contribute to this way of life.
