After visiting the Isle of Man on holiday in 2017, Sandra who is a GP, her husband Craig, and their three young boys immediately fell in love. Fast forward to 2021 and they are settled into their new home and loving Island life.

How long have you lived on the Isle of Man and what made you move here?
We moved here 6 months ago from Aberdeen, Scotland. We first visited the island in 2017 on holiday and immediately fell in love with it. In particular we love the welcoming nature of everyone, the glorious beaches, abundance of lovely food and endless family activities available to us.

 

How would you describe it to someone who has never been?
Magical. Unique. Friendly.

How did you find a job on the Isle of Man?
I initially became aware of the Salaried GP locum job through an advertisement in the medical press. Once we decided to move here I was in regular contact with the Department of Primary Care, who guided and supported me through the application process. Craig was also given a fantastic career opportunity and he’s currently working as the interim chief pharmacist at Noble’s Hospital.

Tell us about your job as a GP – what do you enjoy most about it?
I love the ability to make a real difference to people. Patients come to see us looking for help, or worried about something and we can meet them where they are at and help them through their problems whether it be physical, psychological or a mixture of both

 

Do you feel there is career progression for you on the Isle of Man?
Absolutely. I have been a GP for 12 years and am now nearing the point of considering entering Partnership. I also have two areas of special interest (womens health and palliative medicine) which I would like to pursue, and I am aware there are opportunities to develop special interests on the island.

How was your experience moving to the Isle of Man?
Relocating our family, complete with 3 small children and one elderly dog, during a global pandemic was an interesting challenge! We were fortunate that we received support regarding applying for work permit exemptions and guidance on the necessary Boarder Crossing forms from Manx Care. The local schools were fantastic and were happy to chat with us on TEAMS, even showing us around the schools as we were unable to do so in person.

 

What difference has living on the Isle of Man made to your work-life balance?
Our work life balance has vastly improved since moving here. The commute to work is much less stressful – and very pretty! We both feel our places of work understand the demands of working whilst also raising a young family, and they have been very supportive of this. Outside of work we have been enjoying cycling, sea kayaking, swimming and generally exploring all the hidden gems the island has. Plus eating lots, and lots, of icecream!

What’s the best-kept secret on the Isle of Man?
I honestly feel the Isle of Man in its entirety is the best kept secret! It is so wonderful here, yet not far from the UK, I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t want to live here!

If I had to pick just one thing, I would say the sunsets.

 

What opportunities has living on the Isle of Man given you/your family?
It has given us more time together as a family, more opportunities to do things together and also the opportunity to challenge ourselves with new activities.

Why would you recommend the Isle of Man to others looking to relocate and what would be your top tips?
The island has a strong sense of community and you will feel instantly at home. Top tips? If planning to relocate here, don’t be afraid to get in touch with people already here (either through work contacts or social media). You will be inundated with offers of advice, help and support.
