Watersports for a Summer evening

When you’re surrounded by sea in the Isle of Man, there really is nothing like taking to the water on a warm Summer’s eve.

1) Swimming the Irish Sea

If you’re a hardy soul, sometimes, after a long Summer’s day at the office, feeling the sea lap around your toes or hearing the gentle lull of waves as you lie weightless, can be the most soothing experience on earth.

If this sounds like you, always remember safety comes first. Sea swimming can be dangerous, and the Manx weather can change rapidly.

If you aren’t a confident swimmer, there are plenty of local swimming pools where you can improve your skills in the safety of a heated pool. If you are ready to dive in, always check the conditions, wear appropriate gear (neoprene hat and wetsuit recommended), and only swim where other people can see you – preferably with others.

2) Paddle Boarding 

Over the last decade, stand-up paddle boarding has apparently become the fasting growing water sport on the planet. The reason cited for this is that almost anyone can do it.

3) Kayaking 

If you want to explore the Island’s coast while feeling at one with nature, hop on a kayak.

Kayaking is popular on the Island. There are therefore several places where trained professionals will ensure your experience is safe and fun. The Venture Centre and Adventurous Experiences offer evening and weekend paddles. Here you can check out remote areas filled with seabirds, shipwrecks, and dramatic coastal scenery.

Both companies also offer lessons for children. These take place in venues such as Mooragh Park Lake and heated swimming pools.

4) Coasteering

If you’re a fan of adventure and all things thrill-seeking, coasteering might just be your go-to. This water sport involves a mixture of scrambling over rocky coasts, sea swimming, caves, and leaping into the sea. A fantastically novel way to experience the coastline, coasteering is as memorable and addictive as it is invigorating.

Both The Venture Centre and Adventurous Experiences offer weekend coasteering outings under the guidance of fully trained professionals. Between them they also offer a huge spectrum of other adventures for adults and for children. These range from archery through to sea kayaking, gorge walking and abseiling.

5) Sailing in the Isle of Man

If sailing’s your thing, you’re in luck. Sailing boats sweeping across the Island’s bays on a Summer’s evening are a common sight.

Popular clubs include: Isle of Man Yacht Club at Port St Mary, Ramsey Bay’s Manx Sailing and Cruising Club, Peel’s Sailing and Cruising Club, Laxey Sailing Club, and Douglas Yacht Club.

All these clubs offer healthy social scenes for members as well as RYA training, Regattas, Championships, and sailing programmes. Many, such as Ramsey and Port St Mary, also offer training for children.
